We organize an excursion to Sušac, an island that is special for its specific flora, rich underwater world and isolation which cannot be reached by public transport. The excursion is intended for everyone, especially for those who are explorers and adventurers. Sail with us to one of the most remote offshore islands of the Adriatic.
The island of Sušac is an offshore island 30 nautical miles away from Vela Luka. It is located west of the island of Lastovo and southeast of Vis. Most of the island is characterized by steep and high cliffs, while a smaller part of the island is mild and hilly. The flora on the island is specific and different from that on the neighboring islands. Sušac is named after the droughts – in Croatian “suša” means “drough”. The island is covered by bushy deciduous thickets, rosemary bushes, spruce, wild olives, holm oak, which due to the lack of precipitation have a more intense ethereal scent. The bushes are shaped by sheep and goats, which, along with the lighthouse keeper and shepherds, are the only permanent residents of the island. Sheep breeding, despite the lack of water, has been constant since the time when the first inhabitants came to Sušac. Šušac is an important archeological site, inhabited in the prehistoric times, where sailors used it on their voyages in the initial and middle phase of the New Stone Age. In ancient Roman times, the island recorded population and economic activity, which is confirmed by the existence of a building complex with the remains of a Roman cistern. Above the port of Portić, near the shepherd's house, there are two sacral buildings. One is pre-Romanesque and the other shows Gothic traces and were probably built in the 15th century.
The seabed on the southern side of the island is especially attractive, while diving is a real pleasure. Blue abysses begin just below the coast of the island, and in rare places stone towers rise from the depths around which we can see many fish species. The abundance and diversity of flora and fauna in the Sušac seabed makes it special in relation to the nearby archipelago of the island of Lastovo. Octopuses, cuttlefish, seabream, sharpsnout seabream, gilthead seabream, Common dentex, redfish, brown meagre, the greater forkbeard, groupers, and other species can be found in the waters of this island. Forests of red, yellow and multicolored gorgonians complete the impression of unique underwater gardens with an unreal play of colors.
The most beautiful view is from the lighthouse built in 1879 on the southwestern cape of Kanula, and is located on a 100 meter high cliff. The northwest coasts are steep and cliffy, while on the southeast side there are several bays. It is especially nice to walk along the path overgrown with low vegetation, above the port of Portić, which connects the peninsula with the lighthouse and the shepherd's house.
